ScienceDirect
We recently added a database to our list of subscriptions–ScienceDirect as the name suggests is a database with heavy concentration on the sciences. M.P. Baker Library students and faculty will have access to high quality journal articles in the Physical Sciences area including chemistry, earth sciences, mathematics, physics and astronomy; Life Sciences including agriculture & biological sciences, environmental sciences; Health Sciences including medicine, nursing and allied health. Citations and abstracts in the Social Sciences & Humanities fields such as arts, business, accounting, economics, finance & psychology are also available.
This database maintains more than 2,500 journals and users will have access to almost nine million full-text articles. In addition, it allows the Library to license journal content to subject-specific journal collection such as Archives of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. In other words with this subscription, our faculty and students will have access to current and back file issues of this journal.

Library building
Pardon our noise and dust (in this case excuse our mud!) but as we start the New Year so is our expansion work. We ask for your indulgence as we try to get around the construction area as well as the inconveniences, i.e., network downtime, central heat and any other disruptions that may occur. We will look at these experiences as–growing pains. We will have snapshots of before and after event and will try to keep you posted as we go along with the project. In the meantime we will be in a ‘business as usual’ mode and try to provide you resources and services with our outmost and efficient manner. Please let the Library Staff know needs or concerns that you might have and let us work together as we look forward to a beautiful and expanded facility that we and the community can be proud of.

Nursing Resource Center
M.P. Baker Library recently acquired a new database subscription–Nursing Resource Center. Designed for nursing students, this database brings together in an easy-to-use interface disease and drug overviews, care plans, relevant journal results and animated anatomy and physiology diagrams to complement the core encyclopedia texts. The information is written in accessible language for students completing class assignments and preparing for clinicals as they learn how to care for and treat patients. Search results are returned in tabs that correspond to steps in the nursing process. See slides tutorial—Nursing Resource Center.

East Texas colloquy with Mr. Bob Bowman
Historian Mr. Bob Bowman will be our guest speaker for our next lunchbox lecture at noon in the Library on Oct. 15, 2007. Mr. Bowman and his wife Doris have written 37 books and won numerous awards. Mr. Bowman is a member of the Texas Historical Commission, former president of the East Texas Historical Association. He served on the Texas Sesquicentennial Commission and the Texas Capitol Centennial Commission. Mr. Bowman has been known to be called “the people’s historian” because his writings reflect down-to-earth East Texas history—forgotten towns, good ol’ boy expressions, historic murders, unusual cemetery markers, home remedies and other subjects beloved by East Texans. M. P. Baker Library in cooperation with our Liberal and Fine Arts Department and the B.F. and Mary Payne Fund for the Preservation of Texas Culture proudly presents an East Texas colloquy with Mr. Bob Bowman. Light lunch will be served. The event is free and open to our community.

Kudos – Dr. Jeff McInnis
A member of our Panola College faculty, Dr. Jeff McInnis has written a book recently–Shadows and Chivalry: C.S. Lewis and George MacDonald on Suffering, Evil and Goodness. It is part of the series Studies in Christian History and Thought. The book was published in the United Kingdom and made available to you by your college library. In quoting one of Baylor University’s distinguished professors, David Lyle Jeffrey—“Jeff McInnis has written a book that henceforth will be indispensable to all students of C.S. Lewis who seek to understand the oft-mentioned but till now not fully fathomed debt of his literary and theological imagination to George MacDonald. His well conceived study has the further benefit of doing considerable justice to the angular graces of MacDonald’s anti-Calvinistic understanding of redemption.”
Panola College/M.P. Baker Library has proudly undertaken the project of promoting Dr. McInnis’s book. This scholarly publication is offered to you at $40.00 per copy. For your convenience an order form is attached. Proceeds from the book sale will go towards our expansion project, so please join us in supporting this endeavor.
